Fishing in Naples

The bathymetric map of the Gulf of Naples immediately shows a very interesting seafloor. The Gulf of Naples is fairly flat and shallow. Towards the northern area, around the islands of Procida and Ischia, the rocky seabottom is irregular with depths ranging between 50m to 200m.

Beween Ischia and Capri there's a spectacular Banco di Fuori that seperates the Magnaghi canyon from the Dohrn canyon. This area features impressive drop offs. On the norhtern side of Capri it's around 50m deep, whereas on the southern part the seafloor quickly drops to 1000m!

Year round live bait fishing is done to target dentex, amberjack and grouper. The best live bait to fish in the area of Naples are squid. Reef fishing is another option if you want to fish inshore. Using cut fish and squid you can catch snapper, seabream, conger eel, scorpion fish and other bottom dwellers.

From April to September, bluefin tuna, spearfish and albacore visit the waters of Naples. Whereas albacore and spearfish are mostly caught trolling, bluefin tuna are more often hooked while drifting and chumming. Obviously trolling you'll catch bluefins too, but they tend to be slighly smaller than the ones you catch chumming.
